Origin of stone Buddha
佛教起源于印度，在公元前6世纪，释迦牟尼创立了这个让人深刻的宗教。从那时起，佛教大概经历了原始佛教、部派佛教、大乘佛教、秘密教等多个阶段，而佛教的造“像”，大约从部派佛教时开始，在公元前3世纪的阿育王时代，但那时的造像，还没有佛陀的形象，是用象征物替代。如一匹马象征佛逾城出家，菩提树象征佛的觉悟成道，鹿和法轮象征佛在鹿野苑初转法轮，以及以脚印、莲花宝座来象征佛的存在等等。按造型艺术的视角来看，阿育王时代的隐喻法，就不能认作是真正的石雕佛教造像了。而具体的石雕佛像产生来源，大致有两种说法，一种是历史意义上的，一种是依信仰角度来的。

The creation of "images" of Buddhism began around the time of sectarian Buddhism, in the age of Asoka in the third century BC, but the images at that time did not have the image of the Buddha and were replaced by symbols. For example, a horse symbolizes Buddha's becoming a monk over the city, the bodhi tree symbolizes Buddha's enlightenment and becoming a Tao, the deer and Falun symbolize Buddha's turning of Falun in Luye garden, and the footprints and lotus throne symbolize the existence of Buddha, etc. From the perspective of plastic arts, the metaphorical method in the Asoka era can not be regarded as a real stone Buddhist statue. There are two theories about the origin of specific stone Buddha statues. One is in the historical sense, and the other is based on the elevation angle.
